Museum Update November 2014
Annual Meeting/Board Meeting
All supporters and interested parties are invited to the annual meeting of the Museum on Sunday, November 16, at the Nicon home. Call 206 325 8554 if you are interested in attending. The agenda will include a financial report; final planning for “A Place at the Table,” (the exhibit at the Museum of History & Industry [MOHAI] in early 2015); selection of 2015 Board and Advisory Board members; introduction of ECHODRAMA as a possible event in 2016. Meetings last about one hour.
From August 18 to October 6, 2014, several items from the Museum archive were used in an exhibit entitled EXPANDING THE GREEK LEGACY: An Historical Odyssey at the University of Washington Suzallo/Allen Library. The display showcased the remarkable history of the Greek people and their country as revealed through artifacts and printed materials. The exhibit included pictorial panels from the Gus Rakus collection, historical photos, AHEPA publications and Greek War Relief memorabilia.
Finding Your Roots
On Sunday, November 18, this program will air on PBS and will feature three Greek notables: Tina Fey, George Stephanopoulos, and David Sedaris. Since 2006 Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates, Jr. has utilized a team of genealogists to reconstruct the paper trails left behind by our ancestors. Consult your local listings for the times.
GREEKS IN WASHINGTON hosted the monthly meeting of the Association of King County Historical Organizations (AKCHO) on October 28 at the Church of the Assumption in Seattle. Following their business meeting, the attendees heard a brief presentation regarding the Museum and visited the Museum archive. Many thanks go to the Assumption Philoptochos members who provided a light meal for the visitors.
A Place at the Table:
Over 100 years of Greek Restaurants, Culture and the Entrepreneurial Spirit” will open February 7, 2015, and run through the Memorial Day weekend at MOHAI. Greeks in Washington is grateful for a generous anonymous donation and to the MOHAI staff that is hard at work designing and fabricating the exhibit using photos, memorabilia and artifacts loaned or donated for this purpose. As a prelude to the event, MOHAI’s History Café will present holiday stories from the Jewish and Greek communities on Thursday, December 18. The Greek part of the evening will include the vasilopita (St. Basil’s Bread) tradition and kalanda (Greek Christmas carols) sung by children from the Greek community.
