GREEKS ON THE STREETS

One might ask why these eight Greek-Americans are so happy together on a sunny Seattle Saturday Well, for the first time, an organized group of classic car owners and AHEPA members came together at the GREENWOOD CAR SHOW in Seattle http://greenwoodcarshow.com/.  The event was sponsored by AHEPA Chapter #177 Juan De Fuca, District 22.  Shown here from left to right are Dean Lentgis, Loui Velaoras, John Nicon, Spyridon Nicon, George Apostolou, Spiro Xenos (club leader), Chris Benis and Jim Pappas.  Not pictured, Zoye Marinopoulou.  As the web site says, “It's the biggest single-day car show in Washington State where hundreds and hundreds of rolling works of art go on display and tens of thousands of enthusiasts and spectators walk and gawk all day long.”

The Car Show is a Seattle Seafair-sanctioned event, which gives away it proceeds to nonprofits and charities.  This event brings every type of vehicle one can imagine and stretches for over a mile in Seattle’s Greenwood neighborhood.  By forming the Greeks on the Streets club and arriving before 6am, the group was able to avoid a lengthy arrival process experienced by individual participants.  After securing a prime reserved spot in front of the Greek-owned Pete’s Eggnest, the group enjoyed an early breakfast courtesy of the Juan De Fuca chapter.  They then settled in for a day of sharing their common heritage and their love of classic vehicles.  With hundreds of vehicles competing in 45 categories, the Greeks on the Streets were well represented, claiming two awards: Dean Lentgis for Best Convertible 1950 to present with his 1970 Dodge Challenger and Philhellene Markos Henne with his '54 Buick for Best Stock 1950 to Present.

Here are winners Dean and Markos, with their awards.  For a better look at the participants and their vehicles, “click” on the videos below.

Plans for next year’s event include earlier planning to increase the number of cars to at least 20, and perhaps a whole block of Greeks on the Streets.
